Re: getting rims off
The rust is the problem, and its usually around the hub centric rings... you need to lift the car take the lugs off and kick the tire at the top or bottom not the sides...
if you sit on the ground you can support yourself and just tap it... it should come right off... that way you wont damage anything...

Re: getting rims off
Once off (used large lump of wood to shift mine) wire brush all rust off hub and clean up alloy wheel centres. Put copperslip around hub contact areas - future problem solved!

Re: getting rims off
I recently had to work with a Toyota Corolla and a Dodge Stratus, and as a result I had to sit there and kick the tire at either end until the tire just poped off...
Try to stay away from hammers as the alum is soft and you may damage it...
Just kick the tire at various points and that will help free it up.
My dad often backs out the lugs 1-2 turns enough to have some play between the lug and the rim and then lowers the vehicle to put some weight on the wheel and that often frees it up.
Hope this helps.
