If your vehicle has the Check Engine Light (CEL), also called Malfunction Indicator light (MIL) or Service Engine Soon (SES), take your vehicle to Autozone to have the Diagnostic Trouble Codes read. I recommend Autozone because they read the codes for free. Once you have your code(s) check the code and go from there. If you're not sure what the code means, just ask.

Diagnostic Trouble Codes (P0016 - P0199)
Diagnostic Trouble Codes (P0200 - P0350)
Diagnostic Trouble Codes (P0351 - P0496)
Diagnostic Trouble Codes (P0500 - P0694)
Diagnostic Trouble Codes (P0700 - P0897)
Diagnostic Trouble Codes (P0962 - P1288)
Diagnostic Trouble Codes (P1300 - P1484)
Diagnostic Trouble Codes (P1500 - P1696)
Diagnostic Trouble Codes (P1700 - P3000)

If you want purchase a The All New ScanGaugeII With XGauge, it not only reads your trouble codes but shows:

Maximum Speed
Average Speed
Maximum Coolant Temperature
Maximum RPM
Driving Time
Driving Distance
Fuel Used
Trip Fuel Economy
Distance to Empty
Time to Empty
Fuel to Empty
Fuel Economy
Fuel Rate
Battery Voltage
Coolant Temperature
Intake Air Temperature
Engine Speed (RPM)
Vehicle speed (MPH)
Manifold Pressure (not available on some vehicles)
Engine Load
Throttle Position
Ignition Timing
Open/Closed Loop
Reads Trouble Codes
Reads conditions that set the Trouble Code
Clears Trouble Codes
Turns off the "Check Engine" light
Tells you when vehicle is "Ready" to pass OBDII testing
Make and store up to 10 rewritable special codes to send to the vehicle computer
