OEM HID UPGRADE!!!

Post by Admin on 8/25/2008, 09:43

Very Happy
To bring this tread from the dead, I decided on another upgrade....

I never seem to happy with the amount of light i have on my car for night driving, so now I am looking into upgrading the bulbs on it.

I have ordered a set of:
D2S 5000k CM bulbs. NEW ~3150lm (150$/Set)
D2S 4300k 85122. NEW ~3200lm (55$.set)
D2S 4300k 85122+ ~3400lm (75$/set)

The first set should have the whitest light, but not the most light,
second set should start off yellow and switch to bluer color after a few hundred hours, probably like OEMs,
third set should stay bright whtie, with a yellow tint to it, and give the most light with no color shift.

ANother option I am looking at is possibly going to a 50W HID as those run in the neighborhood of 4500lm, which will be around 50% more light... but I am affraid that this can burn my housings... and overload the electrical system.

Also looking to get an H7 HID for the high beams to use for the DRLs...

I will take as many pics as I can and compare the difference in light output, hopefully they get here soon, so I can try them all out...

Here are the 85122+ Bulbs

85122 OEM 4300k

and the 5000k

Today I got around to installing the bubls but I think they sent me the wrong ones, because the light is more yellow then before, and it looks as if there are no Xenons in there so I think I just got a regular set of 4300k bulbs...

The difference however is still amazing... just look at the pictures to see for yourself...

The new bulb on the left the old one on the right..

Here is a better comparison pic to show you the difference in brightness.

HIDS only

HIDs with HID FOG

FOGS only

I got my bulbs from RETROFIT SOURCE. THey shipped them super fast, the quality is OEM LIKE, and the results are clear.
I will have to talk to them and see if they sent me a 4300k instead of 5000k and if that is so then I will install the new bulbs and take more pictures.

Next upgrade might be a bixenon with nice TL projectors....

at cateramv6, are those the stock d2s projectors? or did you get d2s bulbs with h7 adapters?

Nope the stock headlights in the car had the D2S bulbs in the low beam (HID) and H7 in the high beam. I only upgraded to a newer style OEM D2S bulbs as the original ones had too many hours on them and they had lost quite a bit of the light output... The upgrade was worth the money IMO, more light on the road, safer etc...

yes, definitely i did an s2000 retro in my last car and used philips 85122+ bulbs. the output was rediculous. i would to do a retro, after i opened up the headlights i realized how hard it is going to be to mount the new projectors.

Have you tried this on the Catera headlights? I was looking at the projector and its either hella or bosch... so you can probably get a BiXenon and mount it there. Seems to have a ton of room around. and its already built for projector..

S2000 or TL projector would be kick A** but for now its just a bulb upgrade to get a bit more light...
FOr whatever reason the stock headlights have no cutoff at all, and no blue hue either which blows monkey A**, cuz people always ask me if I have HIDs.. sux... iknow...

Here is a 6000k Bulbs in the headlights, and I think 5000k in the fogs but I may be wrong they look way too blue so they may be some sort of higher K value... they were some unknown brand so its porbably +/- 2000k...

Here are the new pics...

These are the new 5000k bulbs but they were more white/yellow then the OEM D2S...
More info on the bulbs etc...

UPDATE

Post by CateraMV6 on 8/27/2008, 06:30

THis last attempt was with new OEM bulbs and also a New 6000k Bulb installed in one of the headlights...

Light Bulbs LIFE
100% at 0 hours = 3200 lm
90% ar 200 hours = 2880 lm
80% at 1000 hours = 2560 lm
75% at 1500 hours = 2400 lm
70% at 2000 hours = 2240 lm

OEM ~4,300K 3,200 lm
5,000 K 3100 lm
6,000 K 2700 lm > 2560lm 1000hr OEM bulbs
8,000 K 2400 lm

I am quite happy with the output and I think it looks great, night driving seems no different in fact with the 5000k fogs and 6000k bulbs its quite white up ahead, and when I pass cars with OEM HIDs and compare the colors theirs almost look dim but they have more lumens...

I figured I have around 2x2700lm LOW Beam + 2x3100lm FOG = 11600lm
OEM bulbs in low Beam and HID fog would be 2*3200 + 2*3100 = 12600lm
Stock configuration would emit 2*1500 + 2*1200 = 5400lm.
Stock configuration with HID fog would be around 9200lm

The facts are facts, the 4300 puts out the most usable light but its in such a color spectrum that it looks like you are lighting up the road with candles,
In the case of the 6000k bulbs you get so much more whiter light, not blue but white, and the headlight looks different as well but you can tell there isnt as much light to the side, and the intensity of it is not quite like that of the 4300k.

So if you like a bit more exotic color and you dont mind the slightly less light output then you will love the 6000k, the 5000k almost doesnt show color, IMO it looks better in a reflective housing, but when it comes to projectors, there is no point.
You stick with either 4300 or 6000.

Here are some pictures that I captured last night, so you tell me if you like them and lets hear some comments on them.
