good, thats my next project...was going to do a DIY but i took off the air injection pipe and couldnt get the belt out, so im guessing most of the front end and intake will need to come out...if you find an easier way let me know and post plenty of pics. ill hold off on starting till then

I know exactly where you ran in to problems, I'm going to include the factory write up than my own experience. Make sure you get the right belt. I got a 3.0L GM belt for supposedly our car and the Saab. Yeah, 1 1/4" makes all the difference in the world. Didn't fit, took the old one to the shop and got the right one. Install than took 5 min, by myself.

Here it is from the service manual. Some of the info is handy, but I found it easier to access from the top for some things.


The book says about $70 for the belt and 7/10ths of one hour for a professional mechanic, so figure 3X that for the DIY person. Not too bad as long as you don't have a bad back.


REMOVAL PROCEDURE


Disconnect the negative battery cable. Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.
Raise and support the vehicle.
Remove the splash shield bolts.
Remove the splash shield.
Remove the A/C compressor hose strap bolt.
Counterhold the generator bolt on the back side of the generator to remove the AIR injection crossover pipe bracket nut from the generator bolt.
Remove the AIR injection crossover pipe bushing nut , located on the left side of the engine, from the bracket.
Remove the AIR injection crossover pipe clamps from the rubber hose connections .
Remove the AIR injection crossover pipe from the rubber hose connections.
Reposition the AIR injection crossover pipe to enable removal of the serpentine drive belt.
Use a 15 mm wrench to rotate the tensioner pulley clock-wise while sliding the belt from the water pump pulley to remove the serpentine drive belt from the serpentine drive belt tensioner.
Remove the serpentine drive belt.
Clean the serpentine drive belt surfaces.
INSTALLATION



Refer to the serpentine belt routing diagram to install the serpentine drive belt. Important: Ensure the serpentine drive belt is aligned into the proper grooves of the drive pulleys.
Use a 15 mm wrench to rotate the tensioner clock-wise to install the serpentine drive belt last to the water pump pulley.
Reposition the AIR injection crossover pipe
Install the AIR injection crossover pipe to the rubber hose connections
Install the AIR injection crossover pipe clamps to the rubber hose connections. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
Install the AIR injection crossover pipe bushing nut (6) to the generator bolt.

Tighten the AIR injection crossover pipe bushing nut to 12 Nm (108 inch lbs).


Use a wrench to counterhold the generator bolt on the back side of the generator to install the AIR injection crossover pipe support bracket nut to the generator bolt.

Tighten the AIR injection crossover pipe support bracket nut (generator bolt) to 40 Nm (30 ft lbs).


Install the A/C compressor hose strap bolt.

Tighten the A/C compressor hose support strap bolt to 8 Nm (71 inch lbs).


Install the splash shield.
Install the splash shield bolts.

Tighten the splash shield bolts until fully seated. Do not strip the splash shield bolts.


Lower the vehicle.
Reconnect the negative battery cable.
Reprogram the applicable accessories

Again, some of the steps are not nessecary, and I did not need them. Will post pics of what I needed to get around.

yea the air injection pipe was the problem i had...did you have to remove the whole pipe? i tried just removing the bolts and hose clamps but somehow the belt kept getting hung up around the a/c compressor...i notice the tech pub doesnt mention anything about that so im guess the a/c doesnt need to be touched? i tell you what though for the 70 bucks i paid for the stupid book, i think its worthless, pictures are terrible and the instructions aren't descriptive enough.

another thing...did it seem like with a little more effort youd have access to the timing belt? i mean if its there might as well kill two birds with one stone Very Happy

Well, to get at the timing belt, most of your pulleys need to come out, as well as some brackets I think. Haven't done timing belt, so not entirely sure what the process is.
